Almost seventy percent of young people in North Rhine-Westphalia today flock to the cities to study. Living space is becoming scarcer.

A new residential quarter has already been created in a former industrial area in the western part of Essen. A mixed-use concept creates more living space and at the same time increases the quality of life in the neighbourhood. In addition to student apartments, mini apartments are to be accommodated on around twenty floors. Restaurants, retail outlets and co-working spaces are planned for the ground floor.

The mixed-use concept creates an urban density that would not be possible with single-use buildings. This creates synergy effects and a lively public space. The concept thus corresponds to contemporary urban life with short distances between living, working and shopping.
